I want to share this recipe for apple and carrot pouches for two reasons: they are SO easy and quick to make, and you can customize them however you want!

I’m feeding a picky toddler at home, so I had to play around with this recipe in order for my daughter to actually eat it. I’ll do just about anything to get in a serving or two of veggies!

I started out buying baby food pouches, which my daughter loves, but there’s something about using fresh ingredients in my own kitchen that I prefer. Don’t get me wrong, I still buy them all the time, but every now and then I make a version of them at home.

Today I had a helper in the kitchen with me. One way I get some cooking done is by having my daughter sit in the kitchen with me while I read her a book. If you are a parent reading this, I’m sure you can relate to multitasking at this level. 🙂

I started with some whole carrots. I used four smaller carrots for this batch, but the amount you use is completely up to you. This is why I like making these pouches – you can use any ingredients you want and go heavier on whichever one you prefer.

As I said, I’m dealing with quite a picky toddler, so I make these pouches about one-third carrots and two-thirds apples. I’ve found that you need to add a lot of apples to hide that carrot taste if you’re like me and need to hide those veggies.

I’ve made these with fresh apples (I just boiled them so I could put them in the food processor), but my toddler told me “no”. So now I use applesauce. Not as healthy as I would like, but at least she’s getting in those carrots. I’ve made it with both plain unsweetened applesauce and cinnamon applesauce.

I’ve found that Julienning the carrots works better for the food processor. Chopping them left small chunks in the puree that would get stuck when my daughter tried sucking it out of the pouch. After about the sixth “mama stuck” I figured I should find a way to process them better.

I boil the Julienned carrots until they are very tender, and then I put them in the food processor. Then, I just pour in some applesauce and puree! You can taste test as you go so you get the right balance of ingredients that work best for your child.

I use these reusable food pouches. They’re easy to clean (I use a bottle brush) and bring with you on the go. I would just keep an eye on the max line when filling to avoid having to dump some out. I also cannot tell you how many times I have forgotten to twist on the cap BEFORE filling them with the puree. It just pours right through the pouch when I forget to do this. Oops!

Don’t forget that you can make these pouches out of just about anything! The trick is to find exactly what your toddler likes and then experiment with more or less of the ingredients. The possibilities are endless!
